Winegrowing Information

The 2012 vintage was a grape grower’s dream season. Perfectly timed spring rains followed by moderate summer time temperatures created perfect growing conditions. There were no debilitating variations in weather during harvest. Because of consistent temperatures, the fruit ripened evenly producing great ripe fruit flavors and freshness.

Our Syrah is grown on three distinct one-acre blocks: High Block, at 1400 ft. in elevation with south-southeast exposures, Middle Block at 1200 ft. with due south exposures and Low Block at 1100 ft. facing northwest. These blocks are planted to four clones, yielding 1.5 tons to the acre. They are blended to produce a distinct flavor profile offering the unique expression of Kamen Estate terroir. The wines were aged in 50% new, select French oak barrels for 16 months.

Tasting Notes

The 2012 Kamen Syrah was born from grapes harvested at optimal ripeness, de-stemmed and co-fermented with Viognier skins and sun-dried Syrah stems. We believe this proprietary practice adds both aromatic and textural layers.

The result is a inky black/purple, glass-staining powerhouse. Unbelievably fragrant with ultra-pure aromas of candied black cherries, roasted blackberries, black raspberries, wet granite, creme de cassis, blueberry pie, and black pepper. Adding further dimension are notes of sagebrush, sea-air, licorice and wet forest floor. The palate is hugely concentrated with lush black and red fruit flavors that are complimented by abundant but very fine and well-integrated tannins. While extraction and plushness are in the forefront, this wine embraces an overall spirit of seamlessness and length. The 2012 Kamen Syrah will drink beautifully now and will continue to evolve wonderfully over the next 20 years or more.
